How the lesson starts: Expressions, Equations & Parentheses

  1. Bolt's puzzle boxes

Beep boop! Meet Bolt the robot. Bolt opens puzzle boxes with math. Every box has a number sentence. Let's help Bolt open them!

  2. Both sides match

    The equal sign means both sides are worth the same. 7 + 5 and 8 + 4 both make 12. True! 6 + 3 is 9, but 5 + 5 is 10. False! And blank + 6 = 15? It's 9, because 9 + 6 = 15.

  3. Left to right

    The next box says 9 + 5 − 3. There are no parentheses here. So Bolt goes left to right. 9 + 5 = 14. Then 14 − 3 = 11. Box open!
