How the lesson starts: Find and Reason About Arithmetic Patterns

1. Fern the hopping frog

   Hi there! Fern the frog hops along the lily pads. She lands on 6, then 12, then 18, then 24. Where will she land next? Let's crack her hopping pattern!

2. Same hop every time

   Here are Fern's pads: 6, 12, 18 and 24. Now watch her hops. Each hop is plus 6! That's the 6 times table. So from 24, she hops to 30.

3. Let's find the next pad

   Fern hops 9, 18, 27, 36. What comes next? Find the hop: 18 − 9 = 9. Check it: 27 − 18 = 9 too. Each hop is plus 9. So 36 + 9 = 45. Watch out: check every hop, not just the first one!
