Add & Subtract Fractions with Like Denominators

How the lesson starts: Add & Subtract Fractions with Like Denominators

  1. Mia's lemonade stand

Hi there! Welcome to Mia's lemonade stand. Her jug has 8 equal marks. Mia pours in 2/8 of a jug of lemon juice. Her friend Leo adds 3/8 of a jug of water. How full is the jug? Let's add fractions!

  2. Add the pieces

    Here's the jug. Mia's 2 yellow pieces, then Leo's 3 blue pieces. Count them: 5 pieces, each one 1/8. So 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8. The pieces don't change size, so the bottom stays 8! Never 5/16.

  3. Pour some out

    A new jug holds 7/9. Leo pours out 4/9 into cups. 7 − 4 = 3, so 3/9 is left. Now simplify! 3 divides both 3 and 9. 3 ÷ 3 = 1 and 9 ÷ 3 = 3. So 3/9 = 1/3 in simplest form.
