Base-2 Number Sense
How the lesson starts: Base-2 Number Sense

Beep's light bulbs
Hi! Meet Beep, a little robot. Beep can't write numbers. Beep only has light bulbs! A bulb is on, for 1, or off, for 0. With just ones and zeros, can Beep count to 13? Let's find out!
Places that double
Our numbers use base 10. Each place is 10 times the one before. Beep uses base 2. Each place is 2 times the one before: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16. So a 1 in the fifth place is worth 16!
Reading Beep's lights
Beep shows on, on, off, on. In base 2, that's one, one, zero, one. The places are 8, 4, 2 and 1. Add the places with a 1: 8 + 4 + 0 + 1 = 13! It's not one thousand one hundred one.
