How the lesson starts: Logic Grids & Mini-Sudoku

Gus's garden puzzle
Meet Gus the gardener gnome! Gus plants seeds numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4 in a 4 by 4 garden. His one big rule: every row and every column gets each seed exactly once. Let's help Gus plant!
A finished garden
Here's a finished garden. Row 1 is 1, 2, 3, 4. Row 2 is 3, 4, 1, 2. Row 3 is 2, 3, 4, 1. Row 4 is 4, 1, 2, 3. Look down any column, too. No number ever repeats!
One empty spot
A squirrel dug up one seed! Row 2 now reads 3, 4, box, 2. Which number is missing? The row already has 3, 4 and 2. The only one left is 1. So 1 goes in the box! Shapes work the same way.
