Round Whole Numbers
How the lesson starts: Round Whole Numbers

Pip's snowy hill
Hi there! Meet Pip the penguin. Pip sleds on number hills, and always slides to the closest igloo. Today Pip starts at 3,487. Which igloo will Pip reach? That's rounding!
Nearest hundred
Round 3,487 to the nearest hundred. The igloos are 3,400 and 3,500. The top of the hill is halfway, at 3,450. Pip sits at 3,487, past the top. So Pip slides to 3,500!
The rounding rule
No hill? Use the rule. Round 46,512 to the nearest thousand. Find the thousands digit: 6. Peek at its neighbor on the right: 5. 5 or more means round up, so 6 becomes 7. Everything after turns to 0: 47,000!
