Fraction Multiplication as Scaling & Fractional Area

How the lesson starts: Fraction Multiplication as Scaling & Fractional Area

  1. Nova's Zoom Ray

Inventor Nova built a Zoom Ray. Set the dial to a number, zap a toy robot, and its size is multiplied by that number. Will the robot grow or shrink? You can tell before doing any math!

  2. Dial less than 1

Nova zaps an 8 inch robot with the dial on 3/4. Before: 8 inches. After: 6 inches! 3/4 is less than 1, so the robot shrinks. The smaller the dial, the smaller the robot: 8 × 1/2 is only 4.

  3. A tiny floor

Nova tiles a tiny floor 2/3 unit long and 3/5 unit wide. Area is length times width. 2/3 × 3/5: top times top is 6, bottom times bottom is 15. 6/15 simplifies to 2/5 of a square unit.
