Multiply a Whole Number by a Fraction

How the lesson starts: Multiply a Whole Number by a Fraction

  1. Lily's lemonade stand

Lily runs a lemonade stand! Each pitcher needs 3/4 cup of lemon juice. Today she makes 3 pitchers. How much lemon juice does she need? Let's learn to multiply a whole number by a fraction.

  2. Repeated adding

    Multiplying is repeated adding. 3 pitchers means 3/4, three times: 3/4 + 3/4 + 3/4. Count the shaded fourths: 3, 6, 9. Nine fourths! So 3 × 3/4 = 9/4. Multiply the top, keep the bottom.

  3. Honey drinks

Lily uses 2/3 cup of honey for one drink. How much for 5 drinks? 5 × 2/3. Multiply the top: 5 × 2 = 10. Keep the bottom: 10/3. That's 3 1/3 cups. Watch out: don't multiply the bottom too!
