How the lesson starts: Read, Write & Compare Decimals

The Frog Pond Games
Welcome to the Frog Pond Games! Lily the frog jumps 4.18 meters. Hopper jumps 4.108 meters. The judges must read the scores out loud, and say who jumped farther. Let's help them!
Reading a score
To read a decimal, say the whole number, then say and. Next read the digits after the point as one number. Then name the place of the last digit. 7.215 ends in the thousandths, so it is seven and 215 thousandths.
Write nine and 42 thousandths
The judge says: nine and forty-two thousandths. Write 9, then the point. Thousandths means three places after the point, but 42 has only two digits. So a zero fills the tenths place. The score is 9.042, not 9.42!
