Evaluate Expressions

How the lesson starts: Evaluate Expressions

  1. Luna's lemon bags

Hi! Luna runs a lemonade stand. She has 3 bags with x lemons in each, plus 2 loose lemons. So she has 3x + 2 lemons. Today every bag holds 4 lemons. How many lemons is that? Let's find out by evaluating!

  2. Swap in the number

    Here are the 3 bags, with 4 lemons each, then the 2 loose lemons. To evaluate, swap the letter for its number. 3x means 3 × x, so 3 × 4 = 12. Then 12 + 2 = 14. Luna has 14 lemons!

  3. Let's work one out

    Big order day! Evaluate 7x + 5 when x = 6. Swap in 6, and put the times sign back: 7 × 6 + 5. Multiply first: 42. Then add: 42 + 5 = 47. Watch out! 7x is not 76. Gluing the digits gives a silly 81.
