Grade 6 Math · Level 1, Division, Decimals & Signed Numbers

Factors, Multiples, GCF & LCM

How the lesson starts: Factors, Multiples, GCF & LCM

  1. Bea's goody bags

It's Bea's birthday party! She has 24 stickers and 36 candies. She wants identical goody bags with nothing left over. What's the greatest number of bags she can make? Factors will crack this party puzzle!

  2. Sticker rectangles

    A factor divides a number with nothing left over. Bea lays her 24 stickers in a rectangle: 4 rows of 6. So 4 and 6 are factors of 24. Other rectangles work too: 1 by 24, 2 by 12 and 3 by 8. The factors of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24.

  3. The greatest shared factor

List the factors of 24 and of 36. The numbers in both lists are the common factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12. The greatest is 12, so the GCF of 24 and 36 is 12. Bea can make 12 bags, each with 2 stickers and 3 candies!
