The big skate sale
Hi there! Leo has been saving for a skateboard, and today it's on sale! The skateboard costs $60, and the sign says 25% off. Leo also needs some gear, and there's sales tax. How much will he really pay?
Find the discount
Leo's $60 skateboard is this whole bar. 25% is 1/4, so cut it into 4 equal parts. One part, $60 ÷ 4 = $15, is the discount. The other 3 parts, $45, are what Leo pays. Other friendly percents: 10% is 1/10, and 20% is 1/5.
Worked example: 20% off
Leo's knee pads cost $85, at 20% off. First, 10% of $85 is $8.50. 20% is double that: $17. Now subtract: $85 − $17 = $68. Watch out: $17 is what Leo saves. The sale price is $68.
