Random Samples & Populations
How the lesson starts: Random Samples & Populations

The lunch vote
Hi there! Principal Owl wants to pick a new favorite lunch for Maple Hill School. But there are 600 students! Asking every single one would take forever. Ravi's survey team has a smarter plan: ask just some of them.
Population and sample
The whole group you want to learn about is the population. Here, all 600 students. The smaller group you actually ask is the sample. Ravi's team will ask 60 students. A good sample acts like a mini version of the whole school.
Fair or biased?
Which sample is fair? Only the soccer club: biased, one club isn't the whole school. Only teachers: biased, they aren't even students! Only basketball players: biased. Random students from every grade: fair! Everyone gets an equal chance to be asked.
