Grade 1 English Language Arts · Level 5, Build Sentences and Compose

Capitalize and Punctuate

Capitalize sentence beginnings, dates, names, and the pronoun I; use end punctuation and grade-appropriate commas/conventions.

How the lesson starts: Capitalize and Punctuate

  1. Queen Bea's crowns

Hi friend! This is Queen Bea the bee. Bea gives a crown to the first word of every sentence. A crown is a capital letter. Bea also puts a stop sign at the end!

  2. Crown and stop sign

The first word gets a crown. The cat naps. A telling sentence ends with a period. Where is my hat? An asking sentence ends with a question mark.

  3. Let's fix one

Here is a messy one. Where is the cat. No crown and no stop sign! First word, where. Give it a crown. Big W. Now the end. Does it tell or ask? It asks! So pick a question mark.
