Use sentence or passage context to determine or clarify the meaning of an unknown or multiple-meaning word.

How the lesson starts: Use Context to Learn a Word

  1. Meet Detective Pip

Hi, friend! This is Detective Pip. Pip is a puppy who hunts for clues. Meet a new word? The words around it can tell you what it means!

  2. Clues sit close by

Listen. The kitten was tiny, so it fit in my cup. What does tiny mean? Look for the clue. It fit in a cup! So tiny means very small.

  3. Pip cracks a case

The elephant was huge. It was bigger than our car. What does huge mean? The clue is in the next sentence. Bigger than a car! So huge means very big. Check it: very big elephant. Yes!
