Ask and Answer with Literary Evidence
Ask and answer questions about literary text and refer explicitly to words/details from the text as the basis for answers.
How the lesson starts: Ask and Answer with Literary Evidence

Detective Pim
Meet Detective Pim, a hedgehog with a giant magnifying glass. Pim never guesses. When she answers a question about a story, she finds the answer right there in the words. Today you become a story detective too!
Question words are clues
Every question word tells you what to hunt for. Who asks for a character. What asks for a thing or an action. Where asks for a place. Why asks for a reason.
Let's answer a why
Here is Pim's first case. Rosa wanted to skate on the frozen pond. She reached the gate and shivered. Her red scarf was still on her bed! Rosa ran back home to get it. Why did Rosa run home? Why means a reason. The story says it: her scarf was still on her bed!
