Build an Opinion with Reasons and Evidence

State an opinion, group related reasons, support them with facts/details, link ideas, and provide a related conclusion.

How the lesson starts: Build an Opinion with Reasons and Evidence

  1. Ember wants nap time

Meet Ember, a young dragon at Dragon School. Ember wants a nap time after lunch. So she stood on her desk and roared, naps rule! Nobody changed their mind. First, Ember needs a clear opinion.

  2. A claim takes a side

A claim is an opinion that takes a side. It says what should happen. Words like should, need, or best are clues. A fact just tells what is. A question asks. A fence-sitter won't pick either side.

  3. Find Ember's claim

Ember tests four sentences. Lunch ends at noon? A fact. Would naps be fun? A question. Some dragons nap and some do not? It sits on the fence. Dragon School should have a nap time? It takes a side. That's her claim!
