Grade 4 English Language Arts · Level 3, Understand Informational Text

Combine Information from Two Texts

Integrate information from two texts on the same topic to build a fuller understanding without confusing or duplicating details.

How the lesson starts: Combine Information from Two Texts

  1. Ling's Fact Smoothies

Ling the panda runs a smoothie stand with a twist. She blends facts, not fruit! She reads two texts about one topic. Today's flavor is penguins. First, she looks for facts that both texts share.

  2. Two penguin texts

Text A: Emperor penguins live in Antarctica. Thick fat and tight feathers keep them warm. They dive into the sea to catch fish. Text B: Emperor penguins raise chicks in Antarctica. The mother goes to sea to catch fish while the father holds the egg.

  3. Check both texts

To find a shared fact, check each fact twice. Once in Text A, once in Text B. Penguins live in Antarctica? A says it, B says it. Shared! Fat and feathers? Only in A. The father holds the egg? Only in B.
