Grade 4 English Language Arts · Level 3, Understand Informational Text

Read Charts, Diagrams, Timelines, and Text Together

Interpret visual or quantitative information and explain how it supports or adds to the central ideas in a text.

How the lesson starts: Read Charts, Diagrams, Timelines, and Text Together

  1. Ranger Ada's signs

Ranger Ada the otter makes the signs at Bramble Park. Some signs have words. Some have charts and timelines. Ada says pictures often show facts the words leave out. Let's read them!

  2. Read the bar graph

Ada counts butterflies each month. Which month had the most? Find the tallest bar. Slide your finger straight down to its label. June! How many? Read the number: 45 butterflies. Which month had the fewest? August, with only 8.

  3. Read the timeline

Ada's timeline tells the park's story, oldest first. In 1990, kids dug the pond. When did frogs move in? Find frogs, then read its date: 2004. What happened in 2012? Find 2012, then read across: the dock was built.
