Use Evidence and Make Inferences in Informational Text

Explain explicit information and draw inferences from informational text using specific details and examples.

How the lesson starts: Use Evidence and Make Inferences in Informational Text

  1. Detective Moxie's museum

Meet Detective Moxie, a hedgehog who works at the Wild Facts Museum. Visitors ask her tricky questions all day. Moxie never guesses. She reads the sign, finds the sentence that answers, and points right to it.

  2. Key words lead the way

A visitor asks, what color is an arctic fox in winter? Moxie picks out the key words: color and winter. Then she scans the sign for a sentence with those ideas. A fact the text says plainly is called explicit.

  3. Point to the fact

Moxie reads the sign. Arctic foxes live in the icy far north. That's where, not what color. In winter, their thick fur turns white. Winter and a color! That sentence answers the question. In summer, the fur turns brown. That's the wrong season.
