How the lesson starts: Use Evidence and Make Inferences in Literature

  1. Detective Pim's case

Meet Detective Pim, a hedgehog with a very big magnifying glass. The last blueberry muffin has vanished from Bea's Bakery! Pim never guesses. She finds her answers right in the story. Let's crack the case together.

  2. Said right there

Some answers are said right there in the story. That's called an explicit detail. Pim asks a question, then hunts for the one sentence that answers it. The question's key words help her search.

  3. Where was the napkin?

Question: where did Pim find the napkin? Key word: napkin. Pim scans the story. The tray was empty. No napkin there. Crumbs led to the door. Not yet. Under the doormat, Pim found a folded napkin. That sentence answers it!
