Craft a Narrative

Orient the reader, develop characters and events, use dialogue/description/pacing/transitions/sensory details, and provide a fitting conclusion.

How the lesson starts: Craft a Narrative

  1. Zuzu's sleepy story

Zuzu the young dragon entered the Cloud Library story contest. Her first draft: Kofi built a fort. It fell. He fixed it. The end. The judges yawned! First, Zuzu learns the story arc.

  2. The story arc

The setup shows who, where and when. The problem is what goes wrong. The response is how the character tackles it. The ending shows how it all works out.

  3. Let's order a story

Zuzu's cards: Mia's kite tangles in a tree. Mia goes to the park on a windy day. Mia climbs a ladder to free it. The kite flies high again. Setup first: going to the park. Then the problem: the tangle. Then the response: the ladder. Ending: it flies!
