Explain Relationships in Nonfiction

Explain interactions among individuals, events, ideas, or concepts using specific information from historical, scientific, or technical texts.

How the lesson starts: Explain Relationships in Nonfiction

  1. Ravi's chain reactions

Ravi the robot loves chain reactions. A marble rolls, a domino tips, a bell rings! Nonfiction works the same way. Every cause has an effect, and today you'll match them up.

  2. Cause and effect

A cause is what makes something happen. An effect is what happens because of it. Heavy rain falls for three days. That's the cause. The creek spills over its banks. That's the effect.

  3. Let's match the gears

Ravi matches causes to effects. Ask: could this cause make that happen? A kettle heats water, so steam rises. Thunder booms, so the dog hides under the bed. Salt goes on the road, so the ice melts. Each pair fits like two gears.
