Match Language to Audience and Situation

Recognize language varieties/registers and choose formal or informal language appropriate to task, audience, and situation.

How the lesson starts: Match Language to Audience and Situation

  1. Kiki changes colors

Kiki the chameleon changes colors to match where she is. Kiki's words change too! She talks one way with her best friend, and another way on stage at the school assembly.

  2. Formal and informal

Formal language is like a nice jacket: full words, polite, no slang. It fits presentations and notes to the principal. Informal language is like comfy pajamas: slang and jokes. It fits chats with friends.

  3. Let's pick an outfit

Situation: Kiki is writing a note to the principal. Hey, what's up? Too casual. Yo! Way too casual. Dear Principal Gomez, thank you for the new books. Full words, polite, no slang. That fits!
