Revise and Edit Over Time

Plan, revise, edit, rewrite, and use feedback to strengthen focus, organization, clarity, details, and conventions.

How the lesson starts: Revise and Edit Over Time

  1. Bland writing

Chef Lulu the llama writes about her bakery open house. Her draft says it was great, with lots of things. Pom the hamster tastes it. Bland! Writing needs concrete details, like a recipe needs spices.

  2. Vague vs concrete

Great and lots of things are vague. They could describe any day! A concrete detail is something readers could see, hear, smell, or count. Kids tasted star-shaped lemon tarts. Now we can picture it!

  3. Let's pick a detail

Which sentence should follow sentence 2? Many great things happened? Still vague. The late bus? Off topic. The bakery was closed? It contradicts the story. Kids tasted star-shaped lemon tarts? Concrete and on topic!
