How the lesson starts: Measurement Relationships

  1. The toy contest

Welcome to the toy contest! Judge Ruby has a ruler marked in inches. She measures every toy and prize. Who will be the longest? Let's measure along!

  2. Start at zero

Ruby lines up a pencil with zero on her ruler. The pencil ends at 7. So the pencil is 7 inches long! Always start at zero, then read the end.

  3. Inches or feet?

An inch is small, about a paper clip. Use inches for crayons and pencils. A foot is 12 inches, as long as a ruler. Use feet for doors and buses.
