How the lesson starts: One-Step Word Problems

Zoo day!
Hooray, it's zoo day! Our class is visiting the animals. Every animal has a math story. Let's be story detectives. Should we add, or subtract?
Join or leave?
12 penguins stand on a rock. 5 more waddle over. More are joining, so add: 12 + 5 = 17. 15 parrots sit in a tree. 6 fly away. Some are leaving, so subtract: 15 − 6 = 9.
Parts of a group
There are 14 monkeys. 8 are big. The rest are small. How many are small? We know the whole and one part. Whole minus part: 14 − 8 = 6. 6 are small!
