How the lesson starts: Regroup and Break Numbers

Farmer Ben's eggs
Cluck cluck! Farmer Ben collected lots of eggs. A big crate holds 100 eggs. A carton holds 10. The rest roll around loose. Let's break his eggs into parts!
Break a big number
Ben has 629 eggs. 6 big crates: that's 6 hundreds. 2 cartons: that's 2 tens. 9 loose eggs: that's 9 ones. 629 = 6 hundreds + 2 tens + 9 ones.
Let's break 358
Now 358. How many crates? The hundreds digit is 3. How many cartons? The tens digit is 5. How many loose? The ones digit is 8. Write the counts: 3, 5 and 8. Not 300!
