How the lesson starts: Subtraction Within 1,000

  1. All aboard the big train!

Toot toot! Conductor Juno drives a long train. Today, 586 riders are on board. At the first stop, 243 riders get off. How many are still on the train?

  2. Subtract place by place

    Here are the 586 riders as blocks. Take away each place. Hundreds: 500 − 200 = 300. Tens: 80 − 40 = 40. Ones: 6 − 3 = 3. That's 343 riders!

  3. Open up a ten

    Next stop! 452 riders, and 127 get off. We need 7 ones, but only have 2. Open 1 ten into 10 ones: now 12 ones. 12 − 7 = 5. Tens: 4 − 2 = 2. Hundreds: 4 − 1 = 3. That's 325!
