How the lesson starts: Multi-Addend Addition

  1. Poppy's balloon party

Hello! Poppy is planning a party! She has three bags of balloons. Red has 6, blue has 4, and green has 5. How many balloons in all? Let's add three numbers!

  2. Find a friendly ten

    6 red balloons. 4 blue balloons. 5 green balloons. Look! 6 and 4 make 10. Ten is a friendly number. Then 10 + 5 = 15. Poppy has 15 balloons!

  3. Line up the places

    Bigger bags: 14, 3 and 12. Line them up by place. Add the ones: 4 + 3 + 2 = 9. Add the tens: 1 + 1 = 2 tens, that's 20. 20 + 9 = 29 balloons!
