How the lesson starts: Two-Step Word Problems

  1. Nutmeg's acorn story

Hi there! Nutmeg the squirrel has 35 acorns. First, she finds 18 more. Then, she gives 12 to her friend Pip. How many does she have now? This story has two steps!

  2. Two hops on the line

Start at 35. First, Nutmeg finds 18 more, so hop forward 18. Now she has 53. Then she gives away 12, so hop back 12. She lands on 41. Nutmeg has 41 acorns!

  3. Do both steps!

    Nutmeg had 40 acorns. First she found 25. Then she gave away 10. Step 1: 40 + 25 = 65. Some kids stop there! But the story keeps going. Step 2: 65 − 10 = 55.
