Compare Fractions with the Same Numerator

How the lesson starts: Compare Fractions with the Same Numerator

  1. Watermelon day!

Hi friend! It's watermelon day at the zoo! Zookeeper Maya has two watermelons, both the same size. 3 monkeys share one. 6 monkeys share the other. Who gets bigger slices?

  2. Smaller slices

Cut for 3 monkeys: each slice is 1/3. Cut for 6 monkeys: each slice is 1/6. Look! 1/6 is much smaller. More sharers means smaller slices. So 1/3 is greater than 1/6.

  3. Two slices each

Which is greater: 2/4 or 2/8? Both tops are 2, so both monkeys get 2 slices. Now check the slice size. Fourths are bigger than eighths. So 2/4 is greater! Watch out: 8 is bigger than 4, but eighths are smaller.
