Partition Shapes into Equal Areas

How the lesson starts: Partition Shapes into Equal Areas

  1. Pet parade banner

Hi friend! It's pet parade day! Kai has one big banner. The dog, cat and bunny teams each paint a part. To be fair, every part must cover the same area.

  2. Three equal strips

Kai cuts the banner into 3 equal strips. Count the squares: 18 in all. The dog team paints one strip blue. It covers 6 squares. Every strip covers 6 squares, so the 3 parts are equal!

  3. Which has 4 equal parts?

Which banner is split into 4 equal parts? Count the parts in each one. A has 3 parts. B has 4 parts. C has 6 parts. Only B has 4 equal parts! Watch out: count every part, one by one.
