Find Rectangle Area with Multiplication

How the lesson starts: Find Rectangle Area with Multiplication

  1. Bolt the garden robot

Beep boop! Meet Bolt, a garden robot. Bolt plants flower beds in perfect rows. Counting every square takes too long! Bolt knows a faster trick. Let's learn it!

  2. Rows times columns

Here's Bolt's sunflower bed. There are 4 rows. Each row has 6 sunflowers. Instead of counting to 24, multiply! 4 × 6 = 24. The area is 24 square units.

  3. Just the side lengths

A bed is 8 units by 5 units. What is its area? The squares fit 5 rows of 8. So multiply the sides: 8 × 5 = 40 square units. Watch out: adding 8 + 5 = 13 only goes partway around the edge!
