Understand Area & Count Unit Squares

How the lesson starts: Understand Area & Count Unit Squares

  1. Ember's nap quilt

Yawn! Meet Ember, a sleepy little dragon. Ember wants a cozy quilt made of square patches. How much space will the quilt cover? That's called area. Let's find out!

  2. Cover with squares

Here's a small quilt. We cover it with unit squares. Each one is 1 square unit. No gaps. No overlaps. Count them all: 12 squares. The area is 12 square units!

  3. Count row by row

Ember's big quilt has 4 rows, with 5 patches in each row. Counting one by one is slow. Count by rows instead: 5, 10, 15, 20. The area is 20 square units! Watch out: count every square once, with no gaps.
