Measure to Halves/Fourths & Use Line Plots

How the lesson starts: Measure to Halves/Fourths & Use Line Plots

  1. The caterpillar show

Welcome to Nell's Caterpillar Show! Every wiggly caterpillar gets measured. But caterpillars are small. Some end between the inch marks! Let's learn to read the tiny marks on a ruler.

  2. Fourths on a ruler

Here's a ruler from 0 to 2 inches. Each inch is split into 4 equal parts. Each small mark is 1/4 inch. Caterpillar Dot ends 3 marks past 1. Count them: 1 1/4, 1 1/2, 1 3/4. Dot is 1 3/4 inches long!

  3. Let's tap 3/4 inch

Caterpillar Bo starts at 0 and ends at 3/4 inch. Where's the mark? Each inch has 4 small parts. 3/4 means 3 parts. Count marks from 0: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4. Tap that third mark! The middle mark, 1/2, is the same as 2/4.
