How the lesson starts: Interpret Division as Sharing or Grouping

Captain Zara's treasure
Ahoy, matey! Captain Zara found 12 shiny gems. She has 3 treasure chests. She wants to share the gems fairly, so every chest gets the same number. How many go in each chest?
Share them fairly
This is sharing. Zara shares 12 gems equally among 3 chests. Chest 1 gets 4. Chest 2 gets 4. Chest 3 gets 4. Every chest is the same! So 12 ÷ 3 = 4 gems in each chest.
Deal them out
Now share 15 gems among 5 chests. Deal them like cards! Round 1: one gem in each chest, 5 used. Round 2: 10 used. Round 3: 15 used. All gone! Each chest gets 3. Every chest must match.
