Interpret Multiplication as Equal Groups
How the lesson starts: Interpret Multiplication as Equal Groups

Baker Bea's big order
Hi, friend! Baker Bea is packing cupcakes into boxes. Every box gets the same number of cupcakes. Bea wants the total fast, without counting one by one. Let's help her!
Equal groups
Bea fills 4 boxes. Box 1 gets 3 cupcakes. Box 2 gets 3. Box 3 gets 3. Box 4 gets 3. Every box has the same amount. These are equal groups! We write 4 × 3 = 12.
Which equation?
There are 3 groups with 5 cupcakes in each. Which equation shows the total? Groups: 3. In each: 5. Equal groups means multiply. So it's 3 × 5. Watch out: 3 + 5 adds, and that's not the same!
