Carrots in the moon garden
Hi there! Lulu the bunny grows 4 carrots in the moon garden. Her pal Bruno the bear grows 3 times as many. Bruno is very proud. How many carrots does Bruno have? Let's find out!
Three copies of Lulu's pile
3 times as many means 3 piles, each the same size as Lulu's. Here is Lulu's pile of 4. Now Bruno's piles: one pile of 4, two piles of 4, three piles of 4. 3 × 4 = 12. Bruno has 12 carrots!
Pumpkin puzzle
Lulu grows 9 pumpkins. Bruno grows 5 times as many. How many does Bruno grow? Start with Lulu's 9. 5 times as many means 5 copies of 9, so 5 × 9 = 45. Watch out: 9 + 5 = 14 is only 5 more, not 5 times as many!
