Nia's cupcake party
Hi friend! Nia is planning a party. She has 12 cupcakes. She wants them in neat rows, with the same number in every row. Which row sizes work? Let's help!
3 rows of 4
Nia tries 3 rows of 4. It fits perfectly, with none left over! 3 × 4 = 12. So 3 and 4 are factors of 12. A factor fits into a number exactly.
Rows of 5? Nope!
What about rows of 5? Here's row 1 with 5. Row 2 with 5. Then only 2 cupcakes are left. That row isn't full! So 5 is not a factor of 12. Leftovers mean it's not a factor.
