How the lesson starts: Understand Unit Fractions

1. Ember's big chocolate bar

   Hi friend! Ember the little dragon found a giant chocolate bar. Her friends want some too. Ember wants every share to be fair. Fair means equal. Let's help her cut it!

2. One equal part

   Ember cuts the bar into 2 equal parts. One part is 1/2. Into 3 equal parts? One part is 1/3. Into 4 equal parts? One part is 1/4. The bottom number counts the equal parts in the whole.

3. Name the shaded part

   This bar has 8 equal parts, and 1 part is shaded. Which fraction is shaded? Count all the equal parts: 8. That goes on the bottom. One part is shaded, so 1 goes on top. It's 1/8! Not 8/1, and not 8/8.
