Use Multiplication to Understand Division

How the lesson starts: Use Multiplication to Understand Division

  1. Coach Sam's soccer camp

Hi, champ! Coach Sam has 24 kids at soccer camp. Each team needs 6 players. How many teams can Sam make? Sam has a secret: use a times fact!

  2. Line up the teams

    Line the kids up in teams of 6. Team 1, team 2, team 3, team 4. That's 4 rows of 6. So 6 × 4 = 24. And that means 24 ÷ 6 = 4 teams!

  3. Same number, two boxes

    35 ÷ 7 = box, because 7 × box = 35. Both boxes hold the same number! Think: 7 times what makes 35? Count by 7s: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35. That's 5. So 35 ÷ 7 = 5, because 7 × 5 = 35.
