Across, then up
The line across the bottom is the x-axis. The line up the side is the y-axis. They meet at zero, the origin. The first number is x: walk 3 steps across. The second number is y: climb 5 steps up. There's the treasure!
Read a point
Polly the parrot lands on a palm tree. Where is she? Look straight down to the x-axis: 7. Then look straight across to the y-axis: 2. So Polly is at (7, 2). Not (2, 7), that's a different spot!
