Bridge: Divide by Unit Fractions

How the lesson starts: Bridge: Divide by Unit Fractions

  1. Melon time at the zoo

Hi, helper! Zookeeper Max has 4 watermelons for the monkeys. He cuts every melon into halves. How many halves does he get? That's 4 ÷ 1/2. Let's help Max feed the zoo!

  2. Count the pieces

    Each melon makes 2 halves. 4 melons make 2, 4, 6, 8 halves. So 4 ÷ 1/2 = 8, not 2! Dividing by 1/3 makes 3 pieces from each whole. So just multiply by the bottom number: 5 ÷ 1/4 = 5 × 4 = 20.

  3. Now the other way

Now flip the job! Max has 1/3 of a melon left, and 2 penguins share it. Cut that 1/3 piece into 2 equal parts. Now the whole melon has 3 × 2 = 6 small pieces. Each penguin gets 1/6. So 1/3 ÷ 2 = 1/6!
