Bridge: Decimal Operations

How the lesson starts: Bridge: Decimal Operations

  1. The lemonade stand

Hi there! Maya and Leo run the sunniest lemonade stand on the block. A big lemonade costs $4.75. A cookie costs $2.30. How much for both? Money uses decimals, so let's learn to work with them!

  2. Line up the points

    Here's the secret: line up the decimal points, like cups in a row. 4.75 on top. 2.30 below. Add from the right. Hundredths: 5 + 0 = 5. Tenths: 7 + 3 = 10, write 0 and carry 1. Ones: 4 + 2 + 1 = 7. That's $7.05!

  3. Break it apart

    Maya sells 4 jugs of lemonade for $2.35 each. That's 4 × 2.35. Break 2.35 into 2, 0.3 and 0.05. Now fill the boxes: 4 × 2 = 8. 4 × 0.3 = 1.2. 4 × 0.05 = 0.2. Add them up: 8 + 1.2 + 0.2 = 9.4. That's $9.40!
