How the lesson starts: Compare Fractions

  1. The Great Snail Race

    Hi there! Welcome to the Great Snail Race! The snails crawl along tracks cut into equal parts. They are so slow, it's hard to tell who is ahead! Let's learn to compare fractions and find out.

  2. Same size pieces

    First race. Both tracks are cut into 8 equal parts. Pip has gone 3/8. Gus has gone 5/8. The pieces are the same size, so just compare the tops. 5 is more than 3, so 5/8 > 3/8.

  3. The halfway flag

    There's a flag at the halfway mark, 1/2. Is 5/8 past it? Half of 8 is 4. 5 is more than 4, so 5/8 > 1/2. Is 3/10 past it? Half of 10 is 5. 3 is less than 5, so 3/10 < 1/2.
