Ollie's Choco Factory
Hi there! Meet Ollie the octopus. He runs a chocolate bar factory under the sea. His machines cut bars into different numbers of pieces. Can different cuts give the same amount of chocolate? Let's find out!
Same bar, new cuts
Look at these three chocolate bars. The first is cut into 2 parts, with 1 shaded. The second: 4 parts, 2 shaded. The third: 8 parts, 4 shaded. The same amount of chocolate every time! So 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8.
Find the multiplier
Ollie's machine turned 3/4 into 9/12. What did it multiply by? Look at the top: 3 × □ = 9, so □ = 3. Check the bottom: 4 × 3 = 12. Yes! Top and bottom were both multiplied by 3.
