Fraction Word Problems

How the lesson starts: Fraction Word Problems

  1. Captain Zara's ship

Ahoy! Meet Captain Zara and her parrot Pip on the good ship Jolly Muffin. Every day they measure water and rope in fractions. Let's turn their sea stories into fraction math!

  2. Story clue words

Story words tell you what to do. Used, poured out, cut off and gave away mean take away, so subtract. Added, more, put back and collects mean join, so add. Find the clue words before you solve!

  3. Cut the rope

Zara has a rope 7/8 m long. She cuts off 3/8 m to tie a sail. Cut off means take away, so subtract. 7/8 − 3/8 = 4/8. In simplest form, that's 1/2 m of rope left!
