Fraction × Whole Number

How the lesson starts: Fraction × Whole Number

  1. Kai's penguin lunch

Hi there! Meet Kai the zookeeper. It's lunchtime for the baby penguins. Each baby gets a little bit of fish. How much fish does Kai need? Let's multiply a fraction by a whole number!

  2. Groups of unit fractions

    3 baby penguins each get 1/8 kg. That's 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8. Three eighths! So 3 × 1/8 = 3/8. Times means groups of the same fraction.

  3. Groups of 2/9

The 3 seals each eat 2/9 kg of fish. Multiply just the top: 3 × 2 = 6, so 6/9. The pieces stay ninths, so it's not 6/27! Then simplify: 6/9 = 2/3 kg.
