How the lesson starts: Tenths, Hundredths & Fraction Addition

Nova's moon garden
Hi there! Astronaut Nova has a moon garden with 100 tiny plots, in 10 rows of 10. She plants 4/10 of it with moon melons and 7/100 with star berries. How much is planted? Let's find out!
Tenths are columns
Here is Nova's garden: 100 little plots. Each column has 10 plots, so one column is 1/10 of the garden. Nova plants 3 columns. That's 3/10. Count the plots: 30 out of 100. So 3/10 = 30/100!
Now add them
Back to 4/10 + 7/100. The bottoms are different, so rename first. Multiply the top and bottom of 4/10 by 10: 40/100. Now both are hundredths. Add the tops: 40 + 7 = 47. Nova planted 47/100!
